trailing arm top hat replacement

Post by jrt »

Hello, just found that the intermittent boinging noise I've been hearing this week is a knackered top hat. Ordered a replacement. Is it possible to spot weld it in place in situ ?
Cheers David

Yes. Jack up, wheel and damper off, spring off, then get chiselling/grinding/cleaning/repairing.
Plug weld through the holes provided in the new spring pan, I put tacks round the perimiter too.
The rest is well documented.

PS spot welding may be difficult as you will be joining around 2 x 2.5mm and getting the inside of the swingarm clean enough will be challenging, because of access and the reinforcer under the top pressing.

Goes on great with an arc welder though :)

Thanks for the replies.
I did think it could be done in situ, I remember there being a fair bit of room under there when I replaced a spring a few years ago but just needed reassuring as i'd told the local mechanic who's doing the welding for me it could. :ok
