JX Engine dead
HI, Can anybody help please? My 1.6 TD (JX) motor is beyond economical repair following a serious overheat and I need one of the following options - any help would be really appreciated please:
1. 2nd hand complete JX engine (Might be able to use my existing head once it is skimmed)
2. Maybe a 1.9 diesel is an option but I only have a standard 4 speed gearbox - is this an issue or does the box need changing as well if I go this route?
3. Van is in France but I can get the replacement engine shipped here or I can collect with a trailer
4. Will need lots of other bits such as water pump, thermostats etc but getting these from UK suppliers is not a problem. Main issue is the motor itself.
Any help will be really appreciated as I am kinda stuck over here. Do have a good engineer who can do the work once I get the bits however.

Re: JX Engine dead
Can't skim the heads. I have a 1.6 na that I'm replacing over the next couple of weeks. It uses oil but pulls very well. I was going to part it out as it has a good head, fuel pump etc. What's actually wrong with the existing lump?

Re: JX Engine dead
It seems that JX engines are becoming a tad scarce here in Froggyland, there's one on LBC for sale up near Calais butit's not cheap

Hiya Smcknighty
The block is buggered, water in cylinders etc. I have been advised to forget it and drop a 1.9D from a Golf mk3 in instead of trying to fix/repace this 1.6TD
Cheers

Hi Craig
Cheers Mate. Seems my best option is to forget the 1.6TD as they are rare as rocking horse manure and spares are becoming a nightmare. Best option would appear to be to drop a 1.9D in (eg from a Golf Mk3). Any thoughts on this please? Seems it is quite doable with a few mods which, hopefully, my local technical guy can handle
Cheers

You beat me to it mate. Changing motors over here is a dodgy business, you'll get through the CT okay but if you're involved in any kind of accident and the motor is not the correct model the insurers will leave you high and dry as you'll be classed as driving a non-homologated vehicle. It's ruddy annoying as there was a low mileage AAZ engine nearby for sale cheap but I quickly had second thoughts about it

Maybe look for a JX in the UK Brian as many more owners seem to be swapping in 1.9 lumps now.

They crop up from time to time on eBay in varying states of worn, or you could get a properly remanufactured one - eBay item 191879334719.

Good remanufactured JXs are available from Meyer in Germany. Not cheap mind.

That looks a reasonable price. Anyone had any experience of the seller?

AW Engineering are possibly the best diesel remanufacturers in the UK at the moment. Bear in mind that the price of that auction is plus core exchange - no core and the price goes up. It's also reliant on you using all your own ancillaries.

Re: JX Engine dead
Hi Craig,
Getting a used JX seems to be very difficult. Have looked getting full rebuild from Germany but it is quite costly - regrettably not an option due to funds (or lack of lol). Maybe I'll be able to get a used JX in Germany? I am looking at that option as well. I am aware of the difficulties re changing engine type in France and the van is fully French registered so I need to look into this deeper.
Cheers for your help and advice so far

Re: JX Engine dead
Hi Titas (lol)
Saw the website re the rebuilds and for sure they look good but unfortunately they are out of my budget range. Did look on Ebay.de but saw nothing. Do you know of other possible outlets for used engines in Germany please?
Cheers
