Pushrod tube o rings leaking

Post by becandgarry23 »

Good afternoon,

I have put new push rod tubes and O rings on my 2.0l Aircooled van and they started leaking vurtually straight away, I feel this is more down to tolerances/34 year old engine rather than sub standard new parts, does anyone have any alternative solutions, ie a type of sealer to use or any other idea's for sorting the problem please?

I look forward to any help.

Many thanks Garry

What colour where the O rings for the head they should be green or pink, black ones are not as heat resistant.
I nearly always replace the tubes as well now, old tubes can be hard to seal after they have been in and out a few times over the years they get distorted.

Yes, the o rings at the head end are green and don't leak at all, but the one for the block end supplied with the new tubes are black, which are definitely the problem, but I can't find green one's for the block end anywhere, tried just Kampers and a couple of others.

The crankcase ones are black as the crankcase doesn't get as hot, you also have to make sure the holes for the push rods are scrupulously clean as the seals have to move to take up the expansion of the cylinders.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, I'm going to buy a new set of seals and the spring clips in the heads, I'm begining to think they are a big part of the problem if they are the origionals.
