Post by weegaz22 »

Hi Guys, i have bought some vactan for sorting out the rusty seams and spots on my westy, i want to hit it with seam sealer as well once i dig all the old stuff out, i plan to repaint the whole van with Rustoleum Combi-Colour and know there is issues with some seam sealer types/brands vs others, i was just wondering whats the best to buy? came across one post that said he didnt have an issue with one called GR4, but cant seem to find it anywhere so can anyone point me in the general direction of what i sealer i need?

I haven't found a seam sealer yet that Rustoleum likes.
Have tried two PU sealants - Tigerseal, CR4 - take an age for the rustoleum to dry on top of them, although it does eventually- problem is it remains tacky for days on end which allows dust etc to stick to it.
Also tried some Tek7, thinking it would have a less aggressive solvent in it - it was actually worse!
And then theres the brushable stuff like "Grey Stripe" which are pretty bad with Rustoleum as well.
Basically all you can do is leave whatever sealant you use to dry for a week or two before overpainting - even then it will take ages to dry but probably in less time than if you overpaint sooner.
Or you could put primer on the seam sealer first which would probably help.

Thinking outside the box for a minute, Rustoleum uses the RAL chart. I would think therefore that if you can source a clear seam sealer it could be tinted to match and applied after painting. Just a thought.

Its certainly available in straight silicone sealer http://www.sealantsandtoolsdirect.co.uk ... Akxz8P8HAQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; although maybe not at £98. Certainly poly bushes are clear by default and are colourant added (purple, yellow etc) so might be worth looking at those colourants to see if they're compatible.
Roller paint your camper at home: http://roller.epizy.com/55554/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for MP4 download.

what seam sealer did you use covkid? seeing as your the original roller painter and your van has held up for a few years without any issues i may as well buy what you had used on your van, that's interesting about the seam sealer tinting but as you say its 90 quid, a ted stiff considering the benefits of the roller method is price, and that bit of prep is almost doubling your budget
