creaking noise

Post by scottbott »

I have a creaking noise from my offside rear wheel it sounds like it is going creak creak creak as the wheel turns and as I take a right hand bend it eases off and increases when I go round a left hand bend.I nipped into work today to do an oil change and put the van on the hoist and everything seems to be tight,no split gaiters and is silent when I turn the wheel,my father in law thinks that the gaiters may need repacking with grease but he has not heard the noise yet,any ideas what it may be?,it is getting louder

Check that the round spring plates (upon which the spring sits) is secure, noting the condition of the location peg in the middle of it. What usually happens is the bottom of the spring starts wearing away at it until it gradually works its way through. They will creak big time. Also look at condition of shock absorber mounts. And yes, theres a chance it hasn't been picked up on an MOT. I actually pointed it out to my tester explaining what I was going to do to put it right and he was quite happy with that. Took it back the following week to show him. :D

Much easier to inspect fully with wheel off.

Always a good idea to check your nuts on a regular basis.
