How do your gearshift a feel after linkage rebuild?

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

How do your gearshift a feel after linkage rebuild?

Post by mshaw1980 »

I now have all gears although 1st is a little stiff after doing the above. Because I have only driven it once since I got it I was expecting an enormous improvement in gearchange once replacing all of the linkage bushes and gearstick parts but I think it still feels a little vague. I don't know if it's because of driving my Alfa 159 which is so positive in each gear that I was expecting too much of a 28 year old van? Just wondering if I should mark where the clamp bolt is now and try to make some further adjustments?

Does the gearchange in your t25 feel really positive?

Thanks

Just about to reassemble my 5 speed after total rebuild. Will let you know what it's like after.
These are the bits that I sorted...

Fitted oversized plastic ball at the gearbox end.
Fitted two new round plastic bushes on the shifter rod.
Fitted new plastic ends on the fork.
Rebuilt the aluminium guide blocks to the right shape.
Fitted a new ball joint at the bottom of the gearstick.
Took apart and regreased the plastic universal joint.
Fitted a bit of rubber hose on the little bracket that stops you shifting into reverse without pushing down.
Grit blasted and painted the rods/box/cup.
Straightened bent gearstick.
I used moly long life grease (from lidl of all places) on everything.
I used a dot punch to mark the position of the splines before undoing the pinch bolt so I'm hoping I can just put it back the same way.

I put mine back together last night. Big improvement! Turns out the splines were way way out of adjustment so when I readjusted that it was perfect.

Gearbox nose bush (and engine mounts) also play a part in achieving a more positive gearchange. I used to struggle with 1st on my 5 speed until I changed nose bush. Goes in easy now.

I changed all the wearing parts on my gearchange two years ago but still found the shift rather stiff until I oiled the bushes which the rod passes through. It's surprising how much difference it makes in reducing friction. Now I put a drop of light cycle oil on the rod in those two places every couple of weeks just to keep things moving smoothly.

I suppose it might be possible to clean up the rod where it goes through bushes and use PTFE tape or sleeving. Not tried it but don't see why something along those lines wouldn't work.

I reckon ptfe tape will just get shredded. Once the rod has worn (the plastic bush picks up grit, the shaft rusts) the only option is to build up the shaft with weld and resize it.
Not easy to do well, a lot less hassle to cut the end off and replace. 16mm diameter isnt it?
It might just be possible to wrap a long shim around the shaft and clamp each end outside of the bellows to take up wear, but the shim would need to be pre-formed into a split cylinder to make it behave itself.

I grit blasted my rods and sprayed them with epoxy primer. That stuff is pretty tough so should last a good while.
