Boost controller
Morning all,my kkk14 turbo is only producing .4/.5 bar so I'm thinking about fitting a " boost controller".
Any tips/ suggestions?

Re: Boost controller
Do your pressure release valve (plastic bung with nipple on the inlet manifold) is set up correctly?

Re: Boost controller
Also, fuel makes boost, so don't ignore that side of the equation.

Re: Boost controller
Mod the bov so it can't open as it does more harm than good when it opens anyway.
It is quite common for the wastegates to sieze on the kkk's so check it before spending money on a boost controller, there is also a certain amount of adjustment on the wastegate it depends how much more boost you want anything over 20psi and you will need stronger head bolts and a mls head gasket.

Re: Boost controller
ZsZ,I put a cork in the BOV ( on the end of the inlet manifold ) thanks.
Syncroandy,I turned the fuelling down in an attempt to reduce the high EGT ( just over 800 deg c !) but will try turning it up again.
MGP,thanks for the info about the wastegate,I was seeing .7 bar a year ago,it has been slowly dropping ever since ( and the EGT creeping up).
Now I just have to remove the under tray !!

Re: Boost controller
So basically everything was fine until you fitted an EGT gauge and started worrying about what was reading ?

Re: Boost controller
Andy your right! I fitted the gauges so I could keep an eye on things, the idea was to turn up the fueling a bit and maybe fit an intercooler.
I do wonder how these engines cope with the very high temperatures.

Re: Boost controller
The best way to lower egt's is to fit an exhaust manifold that flows coupled with a turbo that was designed within the last 20 years and a free flowing exhaust that is a constant 2.5", you will also be able to get a bar of boost without heating the charge up to ridiculous temperatures.

Re: Boost controller
MGP,I ran the van without the exhaust,no change in EGT but the acceleration seemed slower ( and noisier ).
What exhaust manifold ,silencer and turbo do you recommend ? And would I have to replace the left hand engine mount?

Re: Boost controller
Any manifold with decent flow requires changing the mount, I'm using a early 1z manifold with a garret gt1549 turbo and a custom 2.5" stainless exhaust which is just mandrel bends welded together with a 24" straight through silencer which is no louder than standard.
Since fitting this setup to my aaz I'm struggling to get to a decent temperature for coolant and oil although hopefully some pump mods should sort that but need to get my egt gauge fitted first.

Re: Boost controller
Today I took the under tray off and screwed the wastegate screw in a bit,now I see just over 700deg c and .6 bar boost, will adjust the wastegate a bit more later.

Re: Boost controller
The engine in standard form is fine up to 20 psi.
The k14 starts to pump hot air after 14-15 psi.
I'm running 18 psi on a fairly tired engine with a gt15 turbo however I am keeping the fueling low as I still haven't fitted the egt gauge I bought about 6 months ago.
My mk2 golf is running an sb engine that's still got the k14 and I set that to 14psi and upped the fueling so I get a little smoke and it made a massive difference.
