Anyone have any tips on swing arm mount repairs?

Hi all

Took the rear arch off today, turns out there's some fairly bad looking rust around the swing arm mount, which really put crumbs in my butter as you can imagine.

Here's a picture, sorry not the best but sunlight meant I could hardly see the screen on my phone:



Other side is probably in a similar state, haven't checked yet.

Keep me right here, but I'm guessing to get it repaired properly I'll need to cut back to sound metal on the crossmember and sill, then weld the mounting back on, followed by closing that huge hole up? If I'm going to do that though, how do I maintain the correct wheel alignment?

Remove the swingarm, make up a substantial free-standing jig from 4"x2" timber and mark the position of the slot. Take lots of measurements to locate the mount before you cut it off.

Note that I had to cut off the side of the swingarm mount because it was paper-thin!

though i would suggest removing arm then make up a stteel jig to the old mount location holes and bolt to van , you can then remove the old crap as you will , you HAVE to refit within a mm by rights

Had mine done bought the mount for 30 quid and a guy I know welded it for me

And it passed mot got the part from a schofield in Derbyshire better to pay 30 quid instead of having the whole mount rebuilt

Considering that its a couple of days hard graft IME, buying the bracket is the least of it

Passing the test of time is somewhat different to passing an MOT.

I've not got pictures sorry I think it will pass the test of time as it's a good job by an old school welder the only thing I wish I had done is have both mounts new instead of just one

Thanks for your advice guys, mm and silverbullet pictures are very helpful here. Would like to hand this job over to someone else but by the time I discovered this rot the van had the engine out and panels off 20 miles from nowhere!

Anyway, got the rot in the rear face of the crossmember and arch cut out and replaced with good metal, the mount was only barely attached here so didn't have to disturb it. Haven't quite worked up the courage to cut the mount off the sill yet, but since the floor is rotten as well I should be able to get access to repair the front side of the crossmember without removing the mount. This can then act as a fixed point and I'm planning to clamp/bolt a jig to that and (hopefully) fix the existing mount location, then cut the rest of the rot away...

Not going to attempt making up the new mount myself, £30 for a new one - that seems like a bargain.
