1.6td to afn 1.9 tdi is there a how to on here?

Post by Tommyk77 »

Hi I'm in process of swapping my 1.6 td with a 1.9 tdi afn, is there a guild on here with pics? What ancillaries so be used. I understand there might be a conflict between the turbo and engine mounting but I'm sure that can be overcome.
Cheers Tom K

Tom

there isn't a definative guide to any of the diesel engine conversions as there are a whole bunch of variables andafaik noone in the uk is selling a kit to do conversions, though several UK people/businesses do such upgrades to customers vehicles; there are a whole range of overseas conversion companies who sell parts for the installation of various 1.9 TDi engines so people end up having to do the research and find the stuff and mix and match or fabricate what they need themselves
MV engineering in Telford know their TDis and are UK outlet for FAS stuff
Do a search on here and you'll find plenty of threads with some or lots or no detail
LLoydy's post on Syncro is the most exhaustive AFN post on the board, you'll need a few days to read it though :D

Thanks Aidan
I did a tdi conversion from a mk 3 golf AHU and found great support from vwt4 forum and brickyard. but it seams this is a more involved and less people have done it, plus even less Wright ups. wiring seam grey area. :)

This is how I resolved the conflict between the AFN (Passat) turbo and engine mounting:

(Would have placed the image inline in this post but 80-90 forum seems to be broken)

More info on my conversion:

PS. I can do wiring..

The fittings are 1/2bsp iirc, the first bit (135-degree standpipe) is brazed to a turbo flange from the donor, the 90-degree reduces to 3/8th and the metric adapter onto the sump.

Cool
Dose anyone know which electrical conector goes to the pump and which goes to crank sensor as I didn't label them
They both have three pins and both reach.

The 3-pin plug for the crank sensor has the shielded cable, the pump 3-pin plug doesn't.

Great info guys thanks very much, I've got the wire traced. Laptop is now knackered but at least I have the wire ready.
Are there any common causes of power drain battery goes flat over a week but it did this before conversion.
Cheers for your help.

Hahaha, guess where that ever-so-useful AFN pinout came from... nice to be given credit (not!) given several folk apparently like it...
