Got the van recovered to a local mechanic.

He has redone a compression test and confirmed that there is no compression in one of the cylinders.

Next step is to take the head off to see what the problem is.

No compression on the same cylinder as the one on which you swapped a pushrod tube?
If so the pushrod isnt seated in the tappet/cam follower and its holding a valve open.
Easily corrected, no need to lift the head.
Use a small LED torch to look down the tube and make sure than the pushrod is in the middle of the tappet piston.

Hello all,

Just thought I would log another update.

The mechanic did check the pushrods - but they looked ok. Hes taken the head off and the valve is fouled up. Its a friend of a friends garage , who is doing it when he has some spare time. Am hopeful the final bill will reflect this. :D

Just a question that I hope you guys cab help with - with the engine dropped and head off what should I ask the guys to check / replace?

Clutch seems an like one? Water pump another perhaps?

"The valve is all fouled up"
what's that mean then?

I would be wanting to know if the valve is burnt out and why!
