After replacing the oil filter the only other thing I can think of to look at is the oil pump before throwing the towel in and putting the replacement in.
if you didn't replace the pumo then it could be the wrong one and slipping on the cam drive ( happened to somebody on here recently) but as it was happening before then unlikely.
Try dropping the oil and see if it's full of bearing material.

Oil pump was replaced while in the garage ! So will drop oil and put new oil n filter on ! Then maybe look at other engine ! Would you replace any gaskets etc on other engine or what would you suggest while its out ? Thanks in advance Martyn

Once you are convinced it's knackered I 'd just swap the 'new' engine straight in ( assuming it comes with flywheel) , you could do a few preliminary checks but whats the point, you bought it now.
You can swap an engine in a day if you get cracking early.
If you find it needs some work you will just have to tackle it but you will never give if a proper test until it's in and given a good run.

The only thing I might do is a crank oil (flywheel end) seal check for leaks.

And, if the exhaust is removed or to be removed, get some new studs, nuts and washers at the ready ;)
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here
