Westy gas tank cover lock

Post by Rusty-Bretta »

Hi I have replaced my gas tank cover, not for the first time, and the current one doesn't seem to lock in the same way. I am pretty sure when I locked the old one the tab on the lock went behind the folded up tab on the metal frame, thus preventing the cover opening. The new one seemingly doesn't do this...as the tab looks way too long (I unfortunately through the old one out) and locks by turning 90 degree onto the metal section - can anyone confirm the original way the lock closed? Ta...

Hi Russ

Just had a look at my original knackered one here and will post some pictures up but you are right - the tab turns 180 degrees from 12 o'clock fully open to lock at 6 o'clock. The new one I does the same but I have a feeling the tab is longer. Old tab is about 27mm from centreline of lock to the end of the tab. Tab sits about 25mm from the inner face of the cover - the recessed bit not the ridge that is flush with the lock.

I'll try and get a picture up of the new one if I get chance in daylight tomorrow to compare. The link to where I bought it still works almost three years later but the price has gone up about 20%.

I had a problem when I fitted mine. It should turn the other way too. Try that and I had to bend the lip out a little

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the time and photos taken. I knew I was correct . The current version on sale has a tab too long to turn round the 180 degree from up to down ...It can only turn from 270 to 90 degree position. Might try and source an old Tab. Ta Pete...

I'd send you this one but the big nut holding it to the cover is seized. PM me if you still want it and I'll pop it in the post.

If you take off the smaller nut holding the tab then the barrel comes out. Perfect condition with all the tumblers free on their springs. I suppose the rubber cover keeps the road muck out. Will be the original I guess as the tank cover still had the red German label on it explaining how to fill.

Just took a look at the new one on the van as just about to go out camping and the tab is a flat bar held with a crosshead screw/bolt and stamped 35 which is probably the total length end to end. So no step in it like the original as you can see in the picture. As you saw at Swanage it is a bit loose and when I turn the key the whole barrel turns and frees the tab.

I've just replaced mine (107 Euro's  )...the new lock lever was a good 10-15mm longer than the original. Either swap over the old lever or shorten the new one.
