Oil leak on filler pipe

Post by stys0n84 »

Hi I went to look at 1.6td westfalia and apart from the rust being abit worse than expected I was very happy with it. My main gripe was that it was hard to keep the revs (the guy sed i was changing at 1800rpm when i should be changing at 1200) And before i drove it started from cold no bother with slight smoke but cleared in 30secs.

There was a leak from the oil filler cap down though running and colalecting on the sump. I thought it was just a cack handed person had spilled oil when topping up the oil. But the guy said it was probably just abit of back pressure. I didn't think much of it at the time but it ate at me as to me back pressure causing oil leaks out of the filler is bad news. There was no other leaks i could see and as i say it started right up and ran nice (for an old diesel)

Plastic to metal joint on oil fillers break and they leak, common fault.
I'd be more concerned about rust.

I had the same issue, there was a tiny split as itchyfeet says where the plastic meets the metal. When the oil heated up it leaked.

I asked in the Wanted forum and badgerfax sent me one for a bargain £10. The gasket was £1.33 from Brickwerks.
