Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Bear in mind there is more than just the carb, you may need a new inlet manufold ( yours being modded for webber may not be recoverable) , throttle likage may be different and water pipes may be modded.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
I think it was DF van origionally ( the thermostat housing has an extra water hose connection) hence the solex origionally and twin vac dizzy.
As it now has a DG you need to source the correct dizzy and check timing is set correctly, would also be better to swap carb to Pierburg.
Smiffo went through all this recently but he has the original Solex on a DG replacement.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Interesting, if the engine block reads DG and the van is actually a DF, would that mean the whole engine has been replaced at some point?
Really well spotted on the dizzy, so i'd buy something like the link below, get that fitted then get my timing redone?
https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/type25- ... StartRow=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And assuming the above is right and i didn't immediately get a different carb do you think the new distributor with the new advance would be easier to connect up to this weber?

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Origionally a DF fitted to van the DG is a straight swap ( yes it's been chnged) as it's dimensionally the same but the DG really needs the DG dizzy and carb because thats what it was designed for, you have a DF dizzy no point buying another you need a DG dizzy

you may get a better quality one cheaper by buying second hand.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
You won't look back if you install a good Pierburg.
I did mine a few months ago and I still get satisfaction driving along, knowing how poor my Solex performed in comparison.
My best advice is to know exactly which steps are needed before starting, get a good carb and do it yourself.
Primarily you need to know whether your Webber has a coolant driven choke, or whether just 12v operated. Knowing that will give you a massive head-start.
Don't get a garage to do it. There is some good knowledge on this site - Itchy has already linked to my own thread where everyone chipped in. I will help where I can too - as I am sure others will.
E D I T - just watched your links. Looks like you have the DF/DJ thermostat housing that has the extra port, with hoses modded to feed coolant to the carb choke.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Hi itchyfeet, I meant to put the DG dizzy, got mixed up, I'm deffo gonna change the dizzy at some point. I'm also tempted to change the carb but have some concerns; the current carb although not great if reliable and I'm concerned there'll be lots of hassle. My question would be, do you have a pierburg that'd fit my engine that also has the choke controlled by coolant temp as smiffo mentions? And if so do you have a price on that?
Hi Smiffo, the thoughts of removing and refitting a carb are very daunting! I'm good with my hands but don't think I'd have the confidence to remove the old carb, refit this carb and then set it all up, however I do have some time off next week so maybe I'll start reading up. When you say "a good pierburg" do you have a model in mind or do you mean one that is well refurbed? I'm away Thursday to Sunday but I think I'll start reading your thread and see if it improves my overview.
Thanks to you both, learnt loads about the van in this thread alone and am eager to make the changes mentioned to get it running right.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Sorry I don't have a Pierburg for sale.
The Pierburg 2e3 is the model fitted to these vehicles but you need the exact 2e3 for a T25, Pierburg fitted the 2e3 to many vehicles so don't go buying one off ebay unless it's from a T25.
must have part number on it 025 129 015 and A H or J suffix
H and J are better becuse the carb is not so old.
Yes there is quite a few mods to fit it.
the 2e3 has a water heated choke yes.
I think start with the dizzy because it's got no hope of running well with the wrong one.
if you buy second hand make sure it has the part number on it
025 905 205 C or O ( maybe Q not sure) suffix
Was the JK webber carb purchsed for a DF or a DG? do you have a link to the JK website?

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
`Good Pierburg` is a term I used to mean one in good working order. That is the one mistake I made.
I bought the first one that came up, and it has a faulty choke mechanism in it.
As Itchy says. Get the dizzy first and run it with that on, and note which inlet manifold you have as they differ between carbs.
Your Webber has coolant ports for the choke but plumbed in with the DF thermostat housing - I can see that in your vid you posted - so this is where the advice gets grey.
You `could` adapt the coolant hoses you have to connect to the Pierburg.
If you want it set up as a `standard` DG set-up, that involves more work, different hoses etc ( You will see that in my thread Itchy posted. )
It really comes down to budget and your goal.
Any questions - just ask.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Let me see what I can put together.
We do not need to discuss prices here yet.
It will need a refurb kit, but it will be all there.
I'll need a few days.
The carb will be useless without the proper distributor and suitable hoses.
If you see one for sale in the meantime then by all means buy it.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Hi itchyfeet, thanks a lot for those part numbers that feels like half the battle won just having them. Like you say I'm gonna start with the dizzy first, baby steps making sure the engine runs right with each thing I change instead of changing everything at once and having no idea what's at fault. I am unsure if it was for a DG but the links below hint at the fact it was (jk doesn't sell it anymore)

Hey Smiffo, I'm gonna have a good look around for a decent one if I get one. Kevtherev may have one so I'll probably see if anything comes up there first.
Hello kev, I'd be interested to see what you could put together, I'm gonna look into getting the dizzy done first when I get back from being away on (Sunday). I'd have some satisfaction knowing that was a step in the right direction
Thanks all
P.s. hey kev, where did you get the isometric view of your van from in your profile?
