Torquing clutch - how do I hold it still without proper tool

Post by Winchweight »

As it says really' I've changed the clutch and tightened the bolts with an impact gun, but how can I stop it rotating when I try to torque it up? I don't have a locking tool, so is there an work around?

A suitably placed large screwdriver / prybar in the ring gear teeth usually does the trick, depending on what's around to lever against. Sometimes need an assistant to hold it in place.

If you do either sensibly, it'll be fine. Most locking kits do the same, and remember that the torque you're applying probably won't be very much - indeed most pressure plates I've done have been m8 bolts, and maybe 30nm torque? I'd think your impact wrench has probably exceeded that already?

Torque/tighten through the centre if the crank.

Bolt at 9 o'clock, torque wrench to the right horizontally passing through centreline of crank. Torque it up.
Rotate flywheel so next bolt is at 9 o'clock. Tighten and repeat until all done.

Of course you can do it in any orientation but just easier for me pulling/pushing down doing it that way.
Works every time with no locking tools needed :ok

Beat me to it Elvis. Thats how I do it but I think its one of those things you learn after doing it so many times. The other one is outer CV bolts. You can whizz round them all even with wheel off the ground without having to crawl out, by just jamming a lump hammer between the tyre and the ground. Saves a LOT of time.

Even the pulley wheel nut can be removed without having to lock the flywheel by using a big adjustable on the nut and giving it a short sharp whack with a hammer. The nut will move before the crank has chance to think about it.
