034 SVDA Distributer Timimg - 2.0 CU
Hello,
Yesterday I swapped the 009 distributer which was fitted to my van when I brought it with a 034 SVDA distributor with Powerspark module.
The engine is a 2.0 CU with standard Solex dual carbs.
I checked the timing on the 009 before the swap and it was set to 8 BTDC at idle which corresponded to 30 BTDC at high revs. (No tacho so cant be sure of exact rpm)
With the 034 distributer fitted but the vacuum connections blocked on the carb and distributor I set the timing to 8 BTDC at idle which again corresponded to around 30 degrees at high rev's.
When connecting a vacuum pipe from the Left Hand carb the timing was initially unaltered at 8 BTDC. on reving the engine the timing advances off the scale to approx. 50 BTDC and when left to settle back to an idle it stayed at around 12 BTDC which resulted in a high idle speed.
This seems like to much advance to me as after researching this this the general opinion seems to be not to exceed 40 degrees with vacuum connected.
So I'm asking if anyone else has experience of timing these distributers with the type 4. I have watched Sarans excellent you tube video which was of great help swapping the distributer but he does not give timing readings with the vacuum pipe connected.
Thanks

The timing will advance off the scale when you just rev the engine because the engine it is not under load. The timing should return to 8 deg though. You need to check was it caused by the engine not returning to idle due to the carbs or linkage problem or the distributor base plate sticking.

I will take another look tonight and see if I can see anything wrong with the carbs.
Without the vacuum advance connected the timing at idle drops straight back to 8 BTDC so if there is a carb problem would that affect the amount of vacuum?
Would it be worth altering the timing with the vacuum hose connected to achieve 8BTDC at idle or would that be masking a problem.

Without the vac connected the advance is done by the centrifugal weights rotating the distributor shaft.parkero wrote: Without the vacuum advance connected the timing at idle drops straight back to 8 BTDC so if there is a carb problem would that affect the amount of vacuum?
The vac advance is done by the vac can rotating the distributor base plate inside the distributor, which may be sticking.
No you need to find out why the timing is sticking.parkero wrote:

The base plate in the distributor
springs back freely. tHe problem seems to be that at tickover there is a vacuum present on the hose to the carb which is holding on the vac advance. At a bit of a loss now.

Then it is a carb problem. More likely the carb throttle stops have been miss adjusted. There is another vac take off on the other carb, covered with a rubber seal, try it on that one.

bigherb,
you were spot on it was the throttle stop. Ive adjusted it and now the vac advance is working as it should. Its like driving a different van with the svda distributer. pulls a lot better.
Ive also ordered a carb synchrometer to balance the carbs as Im sure there out. The left hand carb throttle is opening way before the right hand side. I tried to adjust the linkage bar adjuster rod on the rhs but there may be a problem with the linkage bar as the rhs has a lot of slack in the ball connection where it attaches to the carb bracket.
This is the linkage bar the left hand side which is almost a ball/cup arrangement and there is no play.

This is the linkage bar the right hand side and there is a lot play between the ball and the round linkage bar. Is this normal or should there be a sleeve inside? The slop is making it v difficult to adjust.

Yes, there is a cup/bush missing. Have a look round on the top of the engine, with a bit of luck it's dropped out and fallen on the engine.

Thanks for the conformation. I've just found a replacement on vwheritage but there out of stock unfortunately.

Usually found lurking under the alternator after not noticing it dropped out.
You do need to take all the play out the linkage before balancing. If you think it's better with the new dizzy, wait til you get the carbs balanced - if they are far out you'll be amazed at the difference!
