Strange exhaust query - one hot cylinder?

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

Strange exhaust query - one hot cylinder?

Post by tforturton »

I recently had a stainless steel exhaust fitted to my bus - 2.1 petrol.
When I picked it up, the guy told me that they had test run it at 2500 revs for twenty minutes (vehicle stationary), and he had noted that one of the exhaust manifold pipes got red hot. It's the front left side (looking forward) pipe, and he thought it might be running a bit rich. Should I be worried about this? I suppose that normally at 2500 revs, you'd be driving along, and the airflow would cool it down, but if the other pipes aren't heating up, does this indicate a problem with the hot one, and what (if anything) could I do about it?

I would be suspecting an injector blockage making it a bit lean.

As above petrol engines run hot when lean, it sounds like it would be a good idea to get your injectors refurbished.

Probably worth a compression test too incase the valves on that cylinder are deteriorating due to lean burn.
