Having removed my old leaky petrol tank I've now discovered the source of my noisy gear change. The gear linkage near the petrol tank goes through a bracket attached to the underside of the van. The remains of an old black rubber bush is just about visible, but it's grinding metal on metal now
I brought this (Part ID# 251711207D) , but I think it is wrong and can't see how it would fit:

Does anyone know the correct bit I'm after ? I've looked at some diagrams and I'm not getting anywhere

if that big fat red cable rubs through on your gearlinkage you are going to regret not doing something. I hope it's fused.

It's normally cable tied up, but I'm having a little tidy up while the petrol tank is out.

Managed to find the Gear Linkage bush (#251-711-207) available in Germany.
https://www.tk-carparts.de/article/1210 ... _bis_1282.
It's the same part number, so fingers crossed it's the right item.
Luckily my boss at work speaks fluent German and helped me navigate the website. Also manged to pay using PAYPAL, so relatively easy.
Not exactly cheap, £21.60p inc P&P to the UK.
We shall see

If your French is better than your German SK also have the bush in stock . . . genuine VW part as well

The SK site is viewable in English. I have never failed to be disappointed by SK: short orders/back orders, wrongly listed parts etc etc
I won't buy from them now.

Really surprised by your poor experience SB, I have spent hundreds of pounds with them on parts not available elsewhere and never let me down.

I only use SK in a push, despite them being in the same country as me. Oftentimes it's cheaper to order from the UK or Germany, even with the additional delivery costs, but it's true they do carry a few items you'll struggle to find elsewhere.
