Handbrake ineffective

Post by IndigoSteve »

Bernard is due for an MOT in May and I assume that they will test the handbrake. I'm not sure it'll pass if that's the case as on a hill the handbrake will not hold the van. I have to leave it in gear.

What should I check?

Had this problem and it was the hand brake lever on one of the brake shoes had seized.

Handbrake ineffective

Jack up both rear wheels. Apply handbrake two notches. Underneath van right in the middle is the adjuster. Keep tightening until the wheels just grab. Job done.

The rear drum brake should be adjusted with the adjusting wheel in the drum.
Accessible near the wheel cylinder.
If your hand brake is ineffective then your cylinders may well not be either.
Check the shoes for wear, and adjust the shoes till they grab, then back the adjuster wheel off a turn.
See the Haynes for comprehensive instructions.
The cable length adjuster is not a brake adjuster.
