Possible brake line leak but my reservoir level not changing

Post by pleasestartnow »

Hi all

Got brilliant help here before so hoping you heroes can help again. Noticed a leak coming from under the van on Thursday when I got back from being away and only got around to looking last night.

Basically I think one of my brake lines is leaking. A clear liquid is leaking from one of the lines underneath. I put a tray under it last night and I was shocked at the amount it collected overnight. So I took off the instrument covering to check the brake reservoir and it is full. I have attached a picture of the line for ye to see. The cable goes into the cover thing under the front of van where I assume the gear and clutch mechanisms are and thr other end of it dissappear down to the back of the van.

The same line is on the other side of the van and not leaking and the clear liquid is what makes me think it's brake fluid. The van brakes no problem and gear changes feel the same as always no issue.

no picture
if it was any significant amount you would see the reservoir level fall
get some on your fingers, feel and smell it, then pop the top off the reservoir and compare.

Cheers ItchyFeet,

Went and checked that, posted a picture of the line as well. It doesn't smell the same i don't think, the leak smells diesely. Would the diesel be coming from the front of the van via 2 of the same type lines (one on either side of the van)? Looked in the haynes manual and it doesn't show me (or else i am checking in the wrong area) what the fuel lines would look like.

Cheers

That is the fuel tank and fuel return pipe from the engine more likely you are leaking fuel.
The rubber hose looks to be the wrong type it should be an adapter hose from the 6mm plastic pipe to the 8mm tank spigot.

Amazed you haven't spotted difference between fluids. If I get a leak underneath, the first thing I do is smell it.
