what did they use in the factory

Post by busbuddy »

to set the gear linkage?

i used the wiki to learn how to do mine a few years ago but i was asked at the weekend "what did they use at the factory?" and it got me wondering

the wiki is fine but surely there was a different method in the factory and at the dealers should any work need doing, cant see the dealer mechanics being told that you sort of get it about right then fiddle a bit with it

just wondered if there was a magical tool, way back when, for setting it all up or was it done with some special measurements :?

Yes there was a magical tool. VW developed hundreds of tools to remove, fit and align parts correctly across their range (and still do). They're not cheap (if you can get them) which is why most of us use other things that match them as far as possible. The serving guys at dealerships generally had the lot. If you look at a copy of the Bentley manual, many of these tools are shown.
