Securing upper bed boards

The bed boards on our hi-top camper dont have any way to secure them when travelling. How are other peoples ones secured when not in use.

I am concerned that in an accident they would shoot forward and take the driver and passengers head off.

Any suggestions most welcomed.

Our boards have captive nuts and are bolted through the van structure from below. However, our van is a westfalia conversion... of sorts.

Ours have the mattress/sponge sewn into them and covered with a soft but thick felt..

The weight and friction keep them in place..

Our boards have little recesses in them which a small bathroom door lock is applied to one of them. This then bolts into the runners. Only needed on one board, and then locks in place when the hightop bed is made. Quite neat and definitely effective.

Thanks for all of the info guys. I wasn't quite specific in my post. The rear board for the upper bed is permanently attached to the van roof and the wooden frame. Its the free moving front board which pulls forward to make the bed which I need to be able to secure when traveling.

I was thinking of using a pair of heavy duty surface bolt like these (http://www.screwfix.com/p/smith-locke-h ... 02mm/5082j" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) as a solution. I could screw the bolt onto the the end of the bed board and fix the flat keepers on the wooden rails.

Hoping this will work. I also want to get something to stretch accross the opening of the bed space when its not in use. We stuck all of the sleepings bags up there and one by one they fell out during the journey home. How have other people secured the area for storage when its not being used as a bed?

Here's what I have done. Mine is a homebrew camper but you may be able to do something similar.

Here it is whilst driving. Covers, pillows, sleeping bags behind it.



Easily folds down to get the stuff.



Can quickly be taken off to get the kids up or down. You can see here where the brackets are screwed onto the bed board that slides forwards and backwards. You can also see the shed latch to stop it sliding forward. However, weight and friction means it never moves but they are there anyway.




If you've not guessed by now it's a child's bed guard. Cost about £10 second hand off ebay.
