Alternative coolant reserve tank?

Post by Dino »

Hi all,

I've a 1985 CS 1.6 Diesel. I bought when I was a bit more naïve. To cut a long story short, I now realise I've no coolant reserve tank.

I went to buy one but there are none available.

Until the situation changes I was wondering is there an alternative coolant reserve tank I could use that would require little or no modification?

Thanks,
Dino. :D

You can make one out of pretty much any nylon bottle with a screw cap and a couple of pipes.

If you want I have a brand new T4 coolant tank or even a retangular after market one also brand new. Send me a PM if interested.

Thanks for all the replies. Yep, it's the one behind the number plate that's missing. I innocently thought that the diesels didn't have them. How and ever, I've a few days off so if the weather's good I hope to get tinkering on the van again.
And Winchweight, I might just take you up on the offer if there's nothing available locally.
Thanks again,
Dino.

Have you tried VW?
I bought a coolant tank (the other one, in the engine bay) from their commercial arm about 6years ago.

Aye, a home brew tank with the pipe from the other tank going in at the top, (doesn't need to be sealed), and reaching to the bottom, is all that is required. Keep it about 1/2 full of coolant, topping it up with coolant when / if required via the screw cap. Do make sure there is a small breather hole in the top though as they are not supposed to be sealed. A 1Ltr plastic oil container with a hole made in it's cap would be fine. Zip tie / Tie wraps to secure it to the body work = all very boy racer // rally car stylee :D

That's very unfair, they last at least a year (just).
I think that was the last non camping thing I bought off JK, and that was a good few years ago now = lesson learned
"Their" bumper end caps wrecked themselves into bits just going through a normal car wash
The replacement Brickwerks ones are still fine years and several car washes later (mind you, I don't use car washes since the re-spray = hand wash only)

Bought mine from GSF and had no probs with it whatsoever. The cap can be an issue but you can hit lucky with that too.
