Chassis cutaway spot the difference

Post by silverbullet »

Just for fun! What did VW change after this press release and can you see anything that could be improved upon?

The top drawing doesn't appear to use a rear swing arm on the suspension?

 I think they omitted all suspension and drivetrain for clarity. There are other details...

first pic:
I cannot remember the triangle reinforcement bars in the engine bay. and the door horizontal reinforcement looks different than it was made
second pic:
the springs are compressed too much. Looks like a 2" drop

The things that caught my eye were the gussets in the rear corners of the engine bay; the lack of overlap between the inner underfloor channels and the rear chassis members (just behind the rear crossmember) which was fitted; the horizontal master cylinder fitted lower down (if only...)

Things I would add/change/keep:

It would have been great if the box sections and sills were as massive as shown!

Why did VW not put a transverse beam between the B posts and design the fuel tank to allow it? I reckon it would have stiffened the chassis a fair bit.

Likewise closing off the bottoms of the front jacking point outriggers and the steering rack support panel. A bit more structure between the front suspension pickups would have been nice too...

There's just not quite enough beam section to tie the front and rear suspensions together in a bus, something I want to address on mine.

It would all add up to less twist, less flex, less strain on the body seams and so less creaking and less rust!
