Mouser appear to have the 2 that I could only find on Digi-key but their delivery charge is the same - £12 but their value for free shipping is lower at £33 rather than Digi-key's £50 - still no help for a small quantity.
It's a pity CPC haven't got them as they have free shipping on most and they are very quick as the order is automatically selected and packed the minute that the order goes in ( a pain though if you have made an error as you cannot cancel the order with the machinery and you have received it before a human can reply to you!).
There's a clear argument for quality terminals. I'd look to VW: they used brass non insulated terminals that were crimped only. Crimping when done correctly removes all the air this preventing oxidation. Solder would induce corrosion due to dissimilar metals.
Aviation is different: mechanical stresses such as high freq vibration, temperature change: typically -56 to over 150 Deg C, Rapid changes in humidity. But ultimately the effect of a failure must be considered: no laybys at 38000ft. That flight control must work every time, landing gear must lower every time. Every batch will be excessively tested to ensure the probability of failure is minimised: which adds to the cost of each terminal.
For the application of our vans look to the automotive industry: a brass terminal that is properly crimped and, during maintenance, handled correctly should last well over 10 years and probably closer to 30 years (I have only replaced the starter motor terminal).
Most proper automotive electrical suppliers like Farnell, Polevolt, AES all do brass non insulated lucar terminals with or with out the tang, the do the little plastic housing that the terminal sits in (typically seen in the engine bay) and they do the JPT terminals seen on an ISO stereo connector and the hall sensor connector on the distributor.

The original spade connectors on my Syncro like you say are brass and they look 5 years old not 25!
Well I ordered some spades from a line Oldie suggested and thanks all for your input. I think Nicq pointed out that access to the terminals was vital so I redesigned that side of it so I can get access and hopefully will be able to start doing the electrics this week.
oh and I should say that everything i've bought from 12v planet has been A1, just not a big fan of those closed spade connectors. Looking at them again today they aren't so bad just not for me!
