Which oil should I use?

Hi all,

I am a newbie to VW ownership after buying a T25. After spotting some oil spots on the drive way I asked the local garage to have a look. He says yes its got leaks, but nothing unusual for an old engine and nothing really to worry about - OK so I can live with it.

After a couple of long trips I need to pop up my oil levels and I don't know what oil to use. He's a 1984 diesel watercooled, was fitted with a recon 1.9TD AAZ engine a couple of years ago.

Any suggestions what grade oil I need? and if mineral/ semi or synth?
Sorry if its a silly question - I'm new to all this, and a girl to boot, I feel so clueless - help!

Strictly speaking, you should only top up with the same type of oil that was used at the last oil change. Did your local garage change the oil?
I use a 10W40 diesel semi - synthetic for all diesel vans.

I'm a bit confused about that bit! Where is the oil leaking from?
