Rad fan stuck on

Post by VWKat »

HI,

My radiator fan is stuck on, I had to pull the fuse.

1.9 petrol 1985 early speck with 3 prong thermo switch.

Unplugged switch, still stuck on.

I read there is a second stage relay behind the dash to the right of the speedo but I cannot find it.

Stumped... :idea :idea

If you look above the fusebox, but towards earth crowns, you should find it. Its mounted quite high, on a bracket I think.

I wondered what that relay was for....its above the main fuse box, mounted on the side of the van... :ok

And.....that bloomin relay (or at least the connections on it) can become corroded and act like a resistor - tripping the fuse. Had that happening for almost a year before I discovered the cause. I'd advise anyone to unplug that relay, give everything a clean then put it back. Its a badly neglected item, particularly when you consider we pay more attention to the earth crowns. They both get equally corroded.

Thanks so much, I found the relay, it didn't look too happy. Went to halfrauds (as the independent porsche enthusiasts club call them) and purchased a new one. Great :rollin

I am going to check the same relay in the SA asap. The fan is always far too keen to go to "full aquavac" mode...
