Octavia 1.9 Engine Swap

Post by summie »

Does anyone know if a 2004 Octavia Engine will fit into a T25? I've been offered one it's not the PD.

I've been told to take the car and then return it to the yard less the bits I want.

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers

It's unusual for a non-PD to be installed later than 2002. The ASV (as fitted to my 2001.5 MK4 golf) was the last-gasp effort of the Non-PD engines.

However in answer to your question, there's pretty much a kit or parts to fit any engine. The Non-PD doesn't fit the JX diesel brackets, so unfortunately the easier route is to use something like a 1Z or an AFN (same family as the JX).

If you're going to the trouble of fitting a Non-PD, it's almost a better idea to fit a bigger (higher output) PD instead since they are a bit stronger (bigger bearings) and more readily tunable.

From ~98 > ~05 VAG used an improved version of the earlier TDI engine in a wide range of vehicles including 'Mk 4' platform, Polo/Caddy, etc. etc. It did away with the troublesome intermediate shaft, the water pump is inside the block, the oil pump is chain driven from the crankshaft and the vac pump is on the end of the head running off the camshaft. They are considered to be the best VW VE-pump engine. The inlet and exhaust manifold, and bellhousing bolt patterns are the same as before, but the sump and mounting bolt patterns are different. Conversion parts are available to fit them at 55 degrees, I think MV engineering may have them. Personally I wouldn't bother trying to fit one leaned-over though, I have one (from a ~2000 Polo classic) stashed away which hope to fit to my pickup at 15-degrees when I can find the time.

The nice thing about these engines apart from the improved design is the output is within the range that's just about tolerable with the T3 gearbox, unlike the PD. So for example if you have a Syncro or would rather not get into the compromises of a flipped Passat 'box, this engine is probably the best TDI you can fit. I think using the matching DMF is advisable however.

PS. Electrically, the first few years of these engines are basically the same as the previous TDI's, around '99/'00 Canbus started coming in (depending on the platform) so certain data from the ECU (revs, GP status, fuel consumption) starts going over the Canbus. After that they got the 121-pin ECU which can be reflashed over the wire in principle and if you have the skillz. Immo can be disabled on all the ECU's.

Yes, the dash panel part number will have '920' not '919' as the middle three digits. Plus there'll be a twisted pair of orange/black & orange/brown wires at the ECU connector.
