All terrain tyres?

Post by oliverdavitt »

Hey Guys,

I was thinking about putting all terrain tyres on my camper. I have a 1.9 high top leisure drive at the standard height with the standard 14 steels, would a swap over work or would I have to upgrade the suspension and get bigger wheels?

any advice or pics would be great.

cheers

Ollie

You need to take into account the gearing , I have 16" wheels with commercial tyres on my 2.1 leisure drive and whilst it stops the a*** dragging in the mud when camping , it does make it high geared and you have to work it harder on the hills .....

Fit 15" MEFRO steels from Brickwerks. Put on General Grabber AT 215/75R15 all terrain tyres and bobs yer uncle. No other mods needed. That's exactly what we have on our Syncro and it's brilliant on and off road. :ok

On a 1.9 it will knock the stuffing out of any performance it has left. Been there on the same ^^^ tyres. The extra drag of the tread pattern will knock your mileage too.

Can't say I notice it at all. They have great manners on and off road. Even on the long haul to Budapest, road noise wasn't an issue: the whistle from the quarter light window was though....

Before we had the Tdi conversion we had a 1.6TD JX and didn't really notice much loss of performance there either.

Pro's: more grip on the slippy stuff.

Con's: Noisier/less MPG/slower acceleration/working harder on hills/less grip on normal road surfaces/general handling poorer/increased tyre wear.
