Sheared Alternator Adjustment Bolt

Post by jamesakers »

Morning, I've started a service on my new (to me) T25 and the first job was to tighten the Alternator belt to stop it squealing.

I tried to unscrew the adjustment bolt and managed to shear it straight off. What do you recommend I do now? I've secured the alternator in place with cable ties as an interim solution.

Take the alternator off (easy) and have a read of the club 80-90 "wiki" entry here -> https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Te ... bolts/nuts" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Oh, don't forget to disconnect the battery before putting spanners near the back of the alternator ;)

If you end up drilling it out don't worry too much if you damage the threads because you can just drill it M8 clearance and use a nut and bolt to replace. It's not quite so easy to tighten it with a nut as you need spanners on both sides but it really no hardship.

As it siezed the belt probably hasn't been changed for some time, best to just change it anyway, they are cheap enough, if that one looks ok keep it as a get you home spare.
probably 1100mm but look on the belt to see if you can see the length printed on.

I followed the guide and it worked a treat! I had to drill out the bolt as it wouldn't shift even when blasted with penetrating oil. It's my first time doing this so I was very surprised I managed to get it out with the thread intact.

I've replaced it with a nice shiny stainless steel M8 x 30mm bolt and washer. Looking at past receipts the belt was replaced in September and still looks fine, I've now got a replacement just in case.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

Check you're drive shaft bolts too.i was just looking around the engine bay today and noticed daylight between the bolt head & the driveshaft joint.on further inspection another bolt had worked its way out about 5mm.good job I've not been using the van as i'm doing an interior re-furb.once i'm finished will be having a good service .
