AAZ holding back!

Post by lefty67 »

I am having a bit of a problem with the van. Engine starts and runs fine except after a couple of miles, or before engine is fully warm, when cruising in 4th gear there is a noticeable loss in power, more holding back than decrease in revs as if going into a head wind. If I can maintain revs it pulls through after a few seconds and is fine for the rest of the day but if I have to change down or come to a stop, like today, it stalls. If I try to start it straight away it will start after a bit of cranking but if left for a few minutes it starts first time and again is okay for the rest of the day. This happens on hills and flats so not necessarily under load. As said once this has happened engine runs as normal.
I had something similar happen a few months ago when the same pulling back and stalling happened on a local dual carriageway I traced this to a degraded single black wire going to a flat blade connecter by the fuel pump (fuel cut off solenoid?), after I renewed the wiring the van was fine again. Checked the wiring and it is ok but wandering if this solenoid is to blame.

many thanks

I had to change a blocked fuel filter a while ago as mine lost power, has yours been changed recently? (I always carry a couple of spares in the van, Justin Case  )

Hi OBG. I changed the fuel filter and the white plastic valve along with all the injector leak off pipes when I first had the problem a couple of months ago. Not had a problem until last couple of long journeys, no noticeable problem if just pottering around town.
Its a bit strange because it only loses power the one time and is then ok afterwards

I had continual problems until I got rid of that valve and put a different style filter on, been fine for 10k miles.

Would the filter and that valve cause this kind of problem? Have you got a link to the fuel filter you are using adyjoad.

Mann number WK 842/3, then joined the two pipes that go to the valve together with an in line fitting.

Bit of an update. Took off the filter yesterday for a bit of inspection and noticed some black deposits in the white relief valve, looked like bits of rubber from the inside of the fuel line? Anyway blew it all out, reattached filter and took it for a good spin and all is well.
Will persevere with this filter for now especially as it cost nearly £40 but as suggested by adyjoad have bought a replacement just in case, less than a tenner!
Cheers guys

I once had something that looked like fur or hair blocking the banjo on my filter - haven't a clue as to what it was or how it had got in the tank/lines. Cleared it out and had a running engine again. These vans like to keep us on our toes!
