Changing the cab door lock barrel - how?

The lock on my drivers door has seized up, and no longer turns with the key - so I've got myself a new barrel that's been matched to my existing keys... but how do I get the old barrel out? I've got the handle off the door, removed the small countersunk screw and plate that keeps the door opening mechanism/spring in place, but can't see any obvious way of getting the old barrel out?

Am I out of luck if the barrel is seized, or is there a magic trick I'm missing? And if I do need a new handle, can I put my new lock barrel into the cheaper replacement handle available, or will I need the VW original part?

PS. Found out the hard way that you only need remove the screw hidden behind the door seal, not take the entire door apart, to get the handle off. 45 minutes of cursing whilst I put that lot back together!

theres a small roll pin that needs removing , sorry no picky at moment but if you look at your new barrel you will see a groove around the bottom part , pin corresponds to this in your handle

Probably obscured by gunge, once you see it, knock it through to the other side with a punch or something

Thanks chaps, will take the handle off again tonight and give it a thorough cleaning/wire brushing, see what I can find

Yep, I felt 16 all over again, failing to read the whole exam question first before starting my answer... bloomin Haynes!

Is there a way of doing this whilst the van door is still closed and locked...

The bolt that holds the handle in place is behind the door seal, parallel to the door, which I can't see how you'd get at with the door closed.

So I think you may have to strip the door and unlock it that way first, if your lock can be unlocked that way - remove the handles, winder, door opener, door pockets and ease the door card off by working a large flat screwdriver around it carefully + pulling. You should then be able to get at more of the lock mechanism (the leaver that locks/unlocks is pretty obvious where the barrel comes in through the door) and hopefully get that door open!

Thanks for the help all, I can now open the drivers door from the outside for the first time in 18 months. The luxury!

I had same problem on passenger side. I bought new handles and found the only way I could get old lock barrel out (roll pin impossible to find it was so corroded), was to break off the fork at the back with a hefty pipe wrench. The barrel then fell out and this gave me extra lock parts to rekey new locks so they matched.

On an old cab door lock, everything is so corroded or broken they're no worth trying to save other than the barrel. and then only for some of the small parts.
