Gear linkage
Has anyone done a complete gear linkage refurbishment? On a 1.7 diesel ?can it be done without special tool's and without a lift? Was it worthwhile? Finally these short sift kits better or worse?
Re: Gear linkage
Hi Eioke.
Not done it on a diesel, but principle is the same with the petrol set-up.
Differences as far as I know, are different rear section of the linkage, and shift housing under the gearstick will probably be deeper.
This means the ball section that the base of the gearstick goes through is under the floor and bolted to the housing in a diesel.
No special tools required.
Just make sure you buy the correct bushes/kit for your age of van, buy grease, have two sets of mole-grips and a basic socket set,
Check the WIKI as the pictures are from a Diesel set-up.
Finally, make sure you mark the exact position of the two sections of linkage under the van before you remove them.
( Mark them from a insertion depth aspect and rotation - that will save you ages in adjustments. )
Yes, it was worth it for me, but for you it depends on how bad your set-up is before you start I suppose.

Re: Gear linkage
Thanks very much for the reply.
I think mine has a real problem when I change down from fourth to third as sometimes if you try too fast it's like it's selecting upper first if that makes sense, or too slow for third too fast for first

That sounds weird.
I couldn't really comment on that Eddioke.
Certainly not the symptoms I was getting when I decided to do mine - but that isn't to say that adjustment and new bushes etc wouldn't resolve that.
If I were you, I would set up a new question in the mechanical topic section, FAO Aiden.!!
A gearbox guru is what you need to give you sound advice on that problem, I think.
( unless someone else has had a similar issue or has an idea of the root cause. )

Re: Gear linkage
Thanks I will but in the meantime I recon my best bet is to leave this for the time being avoiding quick shifting and get on with the R & R bed etc I also hope I don't get a few points because the speedo is ten minutes slow passed a Mobil speed trap on approach to the A66@60 the car behind swiftly disappeared in my rear view mirror????
