another simple question, in bus heating

the levers for heat or cold air in the dash, how many should there be, 3 or 4
i seem to be blowing hot and cold at the same time, i have no idea why or which way the levers go to give me cold air all the time
i have 3 levers, it looks like there's room in there for a 4th, i can't see if there's a base for another
anyway, how do i set the levers for cold air for now and hot air come winter

Three levers are what should be there. Theres hot or cold and the others just divert the 'blast' wherever you opt for - in theory. Heater unit may just need a good service (ie greasing), new seals on front flaps (bit you can't get to without dash and heater out) and cables setting up correctly.

E D I T: Also makes a difference what sort of wedge you have. If its Aircooled the flaps on heat exchangers in front of the engine may be wedged open/shut or just not operating at all.

depends on age and model, 3 in a panel van, 4 levers in a Bus, or Velle and above

caravelles can have four flaps to direct the flow to the rear through the floor vent.
But generally speaking top one is window to side vent, second one down is hot to cold. If your valve is knakered it may be allowing coolant through to heater even when slider is to off. remove spare wheel and look above it usually manually moving the valve all the way to the shut position for summer will do the job. Otherwise you could bypass the valve and heater with a U peice of 22mm copper, made up from plumbers bits from B+Q or the like.
