zig unit rewire York area
Hi all, hope it's ok to put this in General.
Is there anybody in the York area who can sort the wiring to and from my vans zig unit. The wires were a total mess when I got the van and I took a load of spare wires out. I don't even know if the zig unit is any good. I can do the donkey work of putting the wires through the units and clipping them all in place, just need to know each wire is in the correct place. I am assuming it needs someone who knows what they are doing. I did rewire, or rather wire up from scratch, my first van but that only had a split charge relay and no zig. Many thanks.

Go on Keith find the model number then a wiring diagram can be sorted.

Just braved the sub zero temperature: It's a CF8 (Guessing thats whats needed).

That's the same model I have. York's a bit far from me otherwise I'd pop round and help, but it's really quite easy to work with - just a row of chocolate block connectors on the back.

The full manual is available in the 'Club Stuff' downloads section:

You'll need to bring your starter battery and leisure battery cables up the the back of the unit and connect to terminals 1/2 and 3/4 respectively. The three outputs (connections 5/6, 7/8, 9/10) correspond to the three fuses on the front. Bring the wires for your various circuits (lights, pump etc) up and connect to these terminals - if you have more than three circuits then group them so as not to exceed the fuse ratings.

A couple more diagrams that might help. This is the 'suggested' wiring diagram from the manual linked above. It assumes it's being fitted in a caravan, so just ignore the 12S connector. Has your van got a hook-up, via a consumer unit as per the bottom right of this figure?

And here's a circuit schematic. I added the text box with the explanation of the function of SW5, since I found it hard to remember what that switch was actually doing when I first got my van.

In the top figure, note the relay that powers the fridge when the ignition switch is on (of course, the alternator output is a more common trigger for this relay). The 'split charge' function of this zig unit is not automatic in any way - it relies on you remembering to put SW5 in the 'Touring' position. If you think that's something you're likely to forget to do, then there's no reason why you can't supplement the system with your own split charge relay.

Thanks for that. Looking at the system very quickly it would appear there has been some errors in the original (previous owner(s)) wiring. I'll do it one step at a time and all should be well, I hope.

They may not be 'errors' as such. The standard wiring has no way to connect the mains charger to the starter battery. I've read on here about alterations that people have made to try and 'fix' that. And if you leave SW5 in the 'Touring' position when you're parked up and using your 12V systems, then you'll be drawing from both batteries. Provided you remember to switch to 'on-site' when you get to the campsite, your starter battery will be isolated, and if you remember to turn off your headlights then your starter battery shouldn't need the mains charger.
