Coil - does it matter

Post by Sir Brixalot »

The van became reluctant to start during the day. I took the king lead off the coil and the plastic shattered both ends so Ill change that. There is no label on my coil so I don't know if its grey or green. Does it matter which colour and is there any other way of telling what I've got?

Doesn't matter, the only difference is one gives a higher than normal voltage as a 'long life 'option if your spark plugs are neglected.

Cheers IF I'm going for the grey because I have a vague recollection of there being what I thought was a dirty white label at one time. Any idea if I can buy the lead from the coil to the distributor on its own or is it part of the HT lead set. These constant niggles are beginning to P me off!

if you suspect the leads then I'd just replace

brickwerks sell the bits to make the king lead for about a tenner

Yes you're right. Ordered coil, fuel pump and HT leads. The plastic was very brittle so must be quite old. I was feeling stingey because I've got a £250 excess to pay and I tallied up how much I'd spent over the last year-a lot more than I'd thought!

Yes never tally, it's part of owning an enthusiasts vehicle.
I too had a big year in bills, but the trip to southern Germany and Switzerland made me quickly forget

budget a grand a year and you won't be far wrong, 2k for a syncro, if you can't afford £20 a week every week for the van then don't buy one, plenty have who couldn't, some got away with it and had a fine time, but I'll guarantee subsequent owner paid for the previous owners pleasure

yes £1k a year is what it costs me on average, 400 quid of that is tax and insurance so 600 quid maintenance on average, thats parts only because I do my own work except the odd thing I can't do like a gearbox rebuild.

I have receipts back 9 years....ahh just admitted I tallied it up
I keep a record of the work more so I can look back and see what was done
