Scraped the side of someones van :( how much?

Post by Emma&Al »

So when I was pulling out of the garage last week I reversed and scraped a black VW T4, that was actually at the garage for some repairs!  :| Needless to say, I feel terrible about it.
The owner wasnt there but I told the garage to give them my mobile number and I got a voice message yesterday from the guy who's vehicle it was.

Im going to phone him in the next hour to arrange something.
I don;t want it to go via my insurance, but what are the options?
As far as we the garage could see I had taken a tiny bit of paintwork off but there were no dents - although it was pitch black out so neither of us could see very well! I have no idea how much that would cost to repair.

If he agrees to settle outside of insurance, what do I do to sort this situation? Is there anything I SHOULDN'T do?

Thanks, Emma

Paintwork is never cheap as the whole panel needs to be painted in a body shop,if it were me I'd get a quote from dent devil or one of these types that come to you and repair the paint and dent if there is one and much cheaper than body shop.

:( oh, that's not good news - I think it was just a tiny bit on the corner of the van just above the rear lights. But still, like you say, if they have to do the whole panel, then it won't be cheap.

Perhaps the garage that I was at would have given him a quote when he collected his van? I suppose I won't know until I call him.
Just didnt want to say and do all the wrong things - anyway, here goes!

OK so the update is I just called him and he's asked for 100 pounds (sorry can't find the pound sign on this macbook!) as quoted by VW Resto.
I've agreed to take the money to VW Resto and give it to them to pass on to him. I'm okay with that - but does that sound alright?

[SHIFT 3] ;) £100 sounds fine for full and final settlement and peace of mind IMHO

Glad it turned out to be a reasonable amount :ok it could have been much worse. If anything like that happens again (God forbid) take some piccies on your mobile including the Reg number of the vehicle.

Sounds a bargain. I scraped the neighbour's BMW, this plus a scratch to the tip of the mirror, and that cost £300 cash :(
