hi all im deep in 1.9tdi afn engine up grade in my t3
one word....intercooler

1. does old bus realy need one ?
2. will engine run ok with out one ?
3. if i am to fitt one where do people fit them ?
4 and wot is the chosen core that is easyest to fit.....

1. not life or death but nor was fitting a 1.9tdi in the first place
2. it will but it will perform much better with one
3. everywhere, all depends on your van and skills
4. most people use the one that came with the engine


there are loads of build threads to peruse but ultimately it depends whether you want to fit the intercooler in a planned reasonable place with new pipes and brackets or try and bodge it in using the original pipes, cable ties and some gaffer tape

if you bodge it all in you will spend the next few years battling blown off hoses and eventually end up replacing most of it, doing it properly costs time and money

i did read though loads of info my first idea was left air intake dave but wasnt sure if it would have enough air flow to make it worth fitting in first place
ive decided to fitt against the rear valance fit very well with gaffer tape and zip tie lol :ok

onward and upwoods :ok

No problem mate, it does have sufficient air flow, I checked the intake temp etc with vag com, even a long soak of hard acceleration and it stays surprisingly cool.

I have added some cowelling plates since then to direct air flow through the intercooler rather than passing over it, I haven't checked the intake temps since but it certainly drives as well as it did or better.
