Brake Woes!

Just returned from Glencoe after a few days travelling with the Mrs, on the return we had a loud noise coming from the front Brakes ( grating metal against metal) Now me being a tight Scotsman and it being a Sunday realised straight away that my brake pads were very badly worn.
After some very careful braking all the way home I finally got the wheels off to have a look!

As I guessed, both pads had worn through to the metal, bad score marks on the discs, and I also noticed that one of the flexible brake pipes has a bulge.

New pads, discs and one flexi hose ordered. I only bought the bus about 2 months ago and kind of assumed that the MOT would have picked all this up

If it stopped within tolerance it would have passed....


there is no visual element as I understand it....

but on the positive side...at least you have a definitive starting point to your maintenance journey for the front brakes. Hope you checked the rears too? Of coursed you did

and just a thought...why only one flexi hose....get em all done you tight scot git!! if one has gone, the others really won't be that far behind...especially as that side is now strong enough to highlight and weakness in the system elsewhere! In all honesty mate...the thing with these buses is that you must assume all components to be the age of the van unless you absolutely know better. Not just what the last person told you...what you can see and what is documented... brakes - a tad important! xx


And you got a couple of months before the bills....some don't make it home....and they still love their vans!

A piece of advice. Have your van checked over completely by a friendly garage to identify any other things that need replacing. If the previous owner let the brakes wear down that far before selling, there may well be other gremlins about to bite. Good luck.

Fair One...Just have to look around my area for an honest friendly garage, should be interesting

Yes they test for efficiency, balance and binding but also 'condition'. in theory pads that are almost metal to metal should fail on this point. It also goes without saying that a bulging hose is an automatic fail. One can only assume the tester wasn't all that vigilant as I wouldn't think this has all just happened in the last few weeks.

Glencoe was amazing, for a first time out in the winter with no midges and thinking it was going to be cold when infact we were quite warm. Just have to work out how best to get rid of the condensation..
