New T25 Owner is this normal?

Hi all,
I bought a 1988 1.9 petrol bamboo yellow pickup in august finally got round to getting it booked in for its MOT tomorrow (blame my problematic Corrado for the long wait) its a lovely motor and I do enjoy it. However when starting it I have to have my foot down on the throttle to get it going and then hold it there for a good couple of minutes to warm it up otherwise it just conks out. Is this normal for these vehicles?

My 1982 2.1 Petrol T25 known as Sergy likes 1 pump of the gas and held
down, he then fires up
Sergy likes to warm up before he's feeling like running smoothly
Mind you I don't have to hold the pedal down for 2 minutes, just have to coax him gently towards smooth running

In short, no, not normal. From cold, "normal" procedure would be to set the auto choke by depressing the pedal with ign on (about 3/4 depressed in my case) then crank and van should start (you shouldnt need to pump the pedal either). Once running there shouldnt be any need to touch the gas while the revs slowly build, again, in my case a small blip after a minute or so of warming (depending how cold) and the revs drop down to about 800 rpm.
Assuming you have a 1.9DG with pierburg carb (guessing from age of van), there could be a number of issues you are suffering but it may be the choke pull down not operating correctly. Better knowledge than me will be along to help,.... oh and check out the wiki.

I'd say Autochoke not working. Works on a step cam, two depresses of Accelarator engages it fully, than van should run up to temp on its own. Bi-Metallic Spring is warmed by small coiled spring like device in the housing on the RHS of the carb, 12volt feed. Water also feeds through the Autochoke and once this is up to temperature it takes over the operation. So in your case, the water heater in the choke is working ok (the 2 minute wait you have) but the 12v feed is not. Fairly common, but a worthwhile fix.

Just got it MOT'd at my friends garage and he's worked his magic and she starts with one press of the throttle now and no two minute wait passed with no advisories. Got a couple of flashes of some T4/T5/s on the way home just waiting till midnight to tax it. Thanks for the help everyone
