Cheers John/Paul, much appreciated as always chaps :D

I've replaced the coil with a newer Bosch one I have (same part number as well) and that seems fine and symptoms are the same with both. I'll try the fuel pump test - is there an indication of how much it should be pushing through (should it be consistently gushing & not trickling.....ooo err missus).

Cheers Paul - so could possibly be the Ignition Control Unit? Typically I sold a band new one of these about two months ago. I do have another old spare one so will have a go at swapping this over (thank gord for eBay and cheap bargains!).

Hi Justin, I'm sure you know but you need to be methodical in your tests and your descriptions, write them down helps too.
you said in the op that you changed coil but at the time batt was flat, have you tried changing coil since batt was charged? Also is coil know as good?

Also just because you charged batt once does not mean it's still charged, need to check it every day.

Could still be..
bad 12v supply
coil or ignition amp breaking down
wiring to dizzy
wiring to ignition amp
bad king lead
bad cap
bad rotor arm
bad earth

Cheers Paul, yep really need that tester on the continuity so that's the next thing on the list. Coil was changed when batt was flat, so will change it back to the original to see if that makes a difference. I've got the coil tolerances saved as well so will check these also.

Probably not going to get back to it now until next week so will provide an update as soon as.

Thought I'd update this thread in case anyone else has the same issues. Problem was the ignition amplifier - swapped it over with a spare one I bought off eBay for a fiver about 12 months ago and she started pretty much first turn of the key!

Word of advice from this - if you see any cheap bits and pieces on eBay snap em' up as you never know when they'll come in handy :ok

I have a spare ignition amp bought from for sale ads on here.
Origionals have a very long life, seen a couple of these fail recently, I wonder if they have really failed or if they just need a good clean of contacts :?:

Cheers Paul - yeah, I thought the same and have kept the original and will give it a thorough clean & re-test to see if it makes any difference - could've been the source of my recent backfire as well as it was breaking down. That said, the one I replaced it with looked proper manky (gave it a clean up before putting it on) but worked fine. I'm gonna push the boat out and treat myself to a new one. You have a good Christmas mate?

I have to say I would not have thought of it, it was John, Ghost123uk who suggested it on another post. :ok
I see your pic is not oem, perhaps origional units have been replaced over the years with lower quality units and this is the reason, I suppose everything has a life but oem seem to go on forever.

Yeah, your right about OEM - the 'manky' looking one was a Bosch so assume was an original. Can't seem to find Bosch ones to purchase nowadays.
