1.6jx Sump plug over tightened

Post by therollingbrick »

Merry Christmas.

I thought now would be a good time to do an oils change on the old bus. Torqued up the Sump plug and filled her up starters her up and she was pissing oil every where. So I did the daftest thing and tightened the plug up a bit more. I think I have rounded the threads in the sump.

What are my options over the Christmas period?

When you say you think you have, is the plug just spinning? If so, all you can do is remove and helicoil the sump and start again.
Or do you mean you've rounded the hex head of the sump plug?

The bolt is rounded. But I'm pretty sure the sump is threaded too.

All you can really do is drain the oil, fit a new sump plug and washer and hope you haven't stripped the threads in the sump

Don't know if the universal ones will fit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Oil ... Sw9mFWL3SX - you would have to measure. Halfords used to stock them.

Thanks for all the help and information guys.
It the tapered type about an inch and a half long with the threads at the end. I can't seem to locate a new one anywhere.

I just had a similar issue when doing my oil change, luckily my sump threads were ok.

I would recommend that when you fit the new plug you make sure the bolt head is bigger than previous so it is easier to locate with a good socket or ring spanner.
