Gearbox refurb company in Birmingham

Post by keepitcoming »

Evening All,

I hope I'm not breaking any rules posting this here, please advise if I am but want to share this as I've been having fun the past few months trying to find someone to refurb my gearbox (4 speed, DG engine, 1986 reg). After being messed about or drawing blank on someone who could refurb my crunching and sticking gearbox, I finally came across Roger Bayliss Transmissions, based in Cradley Heath. Their contact details are:

http://www.rogerbaylisstransmissions.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My box was ready within days of receipt (I had a mechanic remove mine for me, they refurb only so you need to get it there), both Roger + son very professional to speak to and called a couple of times to see if I wanted a couple of items they'd spotted to be done, rather than just chuck me a bill at the end. Price was very reasonable as well, I really can't say anymore other than I wish someone had posted this here for me back in the summer when i'd originally come across my gearbox problem as I would have enjoyed the past few months on the road and not in the garage!

Anyway, hope this helps someone else, this is not a biaised or sponsored review, in fact it's my first, just a grateful and satisfied customer.

Kind regards,

Chris.

Welcome and not breaking any rules at all!!!

We do have a very well respected gearbox guru - Aidan Talbot - but he is always booked months in advance...so positive reviews of other companies are always welcome!

Thanks for posting

Thanks Em,

I tried Aiden and was all booked but then thought we'd solved my problem without the need for restrip, seemed happy with what he would do, however i'd have had to get the van / box over to him from Brum, he started from £750 + £100 for the garage down the road to take out and replace box and store van for a week + fuel and time.

I don't want to mislead re the actual cost for mine but I saved well over a hundred £ and that included a replacement (not new) casing as mine was as Mr Creosote once said 'wafer thin' in places (not surprised seeing the outside of it and the fact it's nearly 30 years old), however not much internally needed replacing, just fourth and the bearings on two gears, other prices may include full replacement of kit as standard but I met him at his unit, saw the unit all bare and what had / hadn't been replaced and why.

It was the waiter who said "waffer thin"...

So it's £850 for a gearbox repair NOT a gearbox recondition. Thanks, that's good to know.

I wonder why these are so expensive? I had my xsara picasso 5 speed fitted with new bearings and synchro's as well as a new 5th gear for £550.00 and an LDV box 5 speed fully recon'd for £500 two years ago. These were done in Longbridge.
