Advice/opinions please? Which engine

Post by punkanddisorderly »

Hi all, I'm new here and I'm just after some advice and opinions on which would be the most practical and straightforward Diesel engine to fit into my 81 2ltr air cooled t25.
Any links to threads regarding fitting or fitting guides would ld also be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot
Nick :D

None easily because they are watercooled and yours is Aircooled.

Consider selling your van and buying a diesel

Where are you going to put the radiator? And that's just the first of your problems. Sure, anything can be achieved if you really want to do it, but the time, effort and cost of what you're proposing would vastly outweigh any small benefit you might gain. If your engine is shot, why not get a new or re-furbished one? Plenty available in the VW press.

wasn't intended to be unhelpful, most people buy Aircooled because they love Aircooled, so you will rarely find somebody putting a watercooled in, I can't remember seeing one in the 8 years I have been on here.

I'm pretty sure I've seen someone ask the same question recently, and the general consensus was if you wanted to go down that road, then you should really convert the front panel out for the later wc version

Can't really help with regard to the engine but , I'm putting a Subaru engine into my air cooled van and converting it to water cooled ,, so far iv spent £100 and got all the parts from the front to the rear including all the mounting brackets and pipe work and wiring from a breaker from a water cooled van and cutting a hole in the front will be easy :ok

..and remember. Certainly IDI Diesels (indirect TDs) needca lot more cooling than DIs or petrols. They even modified the floorpans to get more air through the diesel rad.

Im a diesel fan.....only because its the best engine for a van...

But.....i wouldnt contemplate the task of getting air cooled converted to wc and changing to diesel....too much effort, money, messing.
Best advice is a van swop ....to a tdi converted ....or ready to convert van....if you want to driveability that proper diesel gives.

Ps....the easier fitting diesels lack the grunt to make it a pleasant exchange anyway.

I know it's not a diesel but here is an airccooled to petrol conversion , might give you an idea of the coolant additions.
