New carb anyone?

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

New carb anyone?

Post by CJH »

I just spotted an advert for a *new* 2E3 carb for a T25 on German ebay. When you compare it to the cost of a second hand one and factor in the cost of a service kit and perhaps a new choke pull-down and new vacuum hoses, £115 delivered seems like quite a good price. No choke heater though unfortunately.

Is it safe to assume you'll be replacing your Mann filters, Bosch plugs, beru leads..........etc at the earliest possible opportunity?

Google Chrome seems to automagically detect the source language and offers to translate it. If you're not using Chrome I think you can go to Google Translate and paste the URL into the source box to get a URL for the translated website. Unfortunately this particular advert is mostly one big image so Google translate doesn't help much.

I've had some success corresponding with German sellers by using Google translate to convert my English into Google Deutsch. Most German sellers can read and write very good English though, so this usually isn't needed.

I just noticed that this is a very early model - the seller states that it's an 025 129 015, and I just assumed he'd missed off the suffix, but actually that number without the suffix indicates it's from 1982 to 1985. In the photos, the nozzle over the second venturi is a straight pipe, whereas all the ones I've seen have a curved pipe there.

The ebay advert is for a single one. I checked their website (Vergaser Werkstatt), but I can't see a stock list. It's made me a bit suspicious though - I suspect 'As New' might be a better description than 'New', since their website states (according to Google Translate) "The carburetor offered by us are reconditioned carburetor for installation in the finished state".

What makes the early ones more powerful? The Haynes carburettor book says it has the same specs as the A and H suffix models. Only the J suffix model has a smaller accelerator pump jet.

Last week I emailed KSPG (the owners of the Pierburg and Kolbenschmidt brands) for information about Pierburg 2E3 carbs (I was hoping to find other vehicles that might have had carbs with bigger venturis - more on that another time). Today I had a really useful reply with some documents about different models that were fitted to the T25. I was also given permission to share this information, so I'll post a link to the full PDF once I've uploaded it somewhere.

In the meantime here's a few extracts. I haven't had a chance to digest all the information yet (it's in German), but what jumps out immediately is that there were versions with suffices other than the 025 129 015, A, H and J models that are in the Haynes manual. There are D, E, F, G and M suffices as well - the E, F and G versions are actually listed as 2E4 models and look to be interchangeable as far as I can see from the exploded diagrams.
