Anyone in the Mansfield area fancy trying to shift a stuck immersion heater on a cylinder, or know of a plumber they could recommend?

Had the same problem. Bought a new heater and noted the construction. Carefully chain drilled a row of holes in the stuck heater so that a hacksaw blade could be used to cut outwards towards the thread. When I got to the thread, the tension/grip on the heater was relaxed and it unscrewed easily.

May sound obvious, turn the water supply off and drain the tank first if you have a go.

To far away, but.... best way to remove a stuck immersion.
turn water supply off to cylinder-do not drain yet.
put your immersion spanner on the immersion-one of the cast iron ones with a decent handle is best
get a lump hammer and whack the the handle of the spanner (in direction of undoing)
it should free off pretty quick
drain cylinder slightly
remove immersion and replace.

not draining the cylinder at the start, supports the thin copper and stops the actual cylinder deforming as you undo it.

Do bear in mind 90% of the time a non working immersion is down to the thermostat, which can be changed in 2 mins with a screwdriver.

Depending on water hardness in the area, it still may deform when forced, hence, my liberal use of gas ptfe on the threads when replacing immersions or fitting new. Many an old hand has scoffed me with the usual 'they come with a gasket to prevent leaks so the ptfe is redundant' - not if you take the long view!!
