Yup gunk + kitchen scrubber brush and an old electric tooth brush for the nooks and crannies perfect.

The problem I have with Gunk (& Jizer) is the mess it leaves on the driveway / road when you rinse it off.

Best way is to work on a small area at a time - spray Gunk, soak and agitate with brushes but then use rags to remove the worst of the soiling , maybe with the help of a spray-bottle with water in, before rinsing with a hose. This way only light soiling finds its way to the ground and the real filth can be safely binned. Also the engine bay will be more thoroughly cleaned as you focus on one bit at a time rather than trying to scrub the whole engine at once.
I used this method to take an untouched original engine bay to a really clean one without destroying the ground below - my wife would have killed me

Bilt Hamber Surfex HD
No smell, water degradable, can be used neat for heavy deposits or diluted at 1part HD to 10 of water for lighter deposits. The 10% mix can be used for upholstery cleaning or any other general cleaning. I've used it today for removing the tar deposits from the wallpaper in the wife's smoking chamber.
