stock 1.6 jx change from 4 to 5 speed trans

Post by lost in Denmark »

I have a tired 1.6 td jx. syncro with an OK 4 speed gear box. The JX is OK for this old man driving in DK but I think that I would like to change the gear box to a 5 speed. I always feel like I need to shift one more time to get the poor little engine a break. I understand that changing the gears in the box can produce similar results. All mechanical work is going to be done by someone else that has a clue. BUT he is not familiar with the t3 so he is adlibing. I am a person with enough knowledge to be dangerous but am willing to learn.

There are not much difference between a 4 speed and a 5 speed in the final ratios. You will end up about the same revs at same speeds. 5 speed boxes often sold for crazy money and will not give the expected results.
Depends on what 4 speed gearbox you have, it may be the easiest way to change the gears in it.

Check your gearbox code for current ratios.

Aidan will be along to give a comprehensive answer as to why a syncro cannot be converted to 5-speed.

Dont forget the Oettingers... ;-)

Change wheel size. Cheaper and produces proper results.

OK thanks for the info. I kind of thought that was what I was going to hear. So how big should the tires be to compensate for the strain to the engine?
