a change of pump

when i first got the van - it had an electric fuel pump on it - bog standard -
stuck next to the black box in the engine bay -
had it changed to a mechanical fuel pump -
new rod on the pump -
ran ok for a few years with that arrangement -
now fuel pump seems to hesitate - sometimes struggles with drawing fuel -
fuel lines /carb / all seem clean and fine -
thinking of going back to the bog standard electric pump by the black box idea -
1. is this an ok place to site a standard pump?
2. do i need to remove/blank off/ tie up?!? mechanical fuel pump?
3. if so - where to get a blanking plate?

hope peepscan give us some suggestions -

Depends on pump type I think. Certainly Facets have to be mounted as close to tank as practical. I assume this is so pump isn't running dry.

Facet style then. Should be mounted underneath near the tank. This is to ensure the line is primed. Old pump can stay where it is. Just remove pushrod if you like and put it into retirement. The symptoms you mention certainly sound like failing mech pump. Often its a gradual and annoying fault.

Once hoses are secure, the only potential weak link is the float bowl valve. Since the fuel is under a little more pressure, and its the float valve that tells the pump it has enough fuel, if its worn, fuel can leak past it and flood engine. Providing the valve seals well, all should work as you hope. Electrical connections been covered extensively (search on here for Facet).
