2ltr Aircooled nasty noise

Post by burnzdog »

Hi all,

Been a while since posting. Just picked me up a 1983 viking 2 Ltr Aircooled. However there are some issues. Its been sat for some time. Got it going but after driving for a short time I can hear quite a nasty knocking noise. Doesn't happen when idling only when running. Not sure if only when in gear. Struggles to start too. Its also losing quite a bit of oil from somewhere im yet to find. Basically previous owner didn't look after very well.

Low on budget and really hoping its not a fooked engine. Going to give it a service and clean up the basics. Will also try and find the oil leak.

Any other advice will be much appreciated. Not familiar with the 2ltr air cooled for the T3.

Thanks in advance.

Pull the sump strainer and check for any metal particles...

Knocking may just be dried out or knackered CV joint but a compression check sounds like a good basis to start from.

Thanks chaps.

Managed to get my head under the engine briefly.

Couple of initital observations. 2 of the HT leads connecting to the distributor had very poor connections. So this may be why it has trouble turning over.

Shockingly I just discovered the previous owner has been putting in 10w/40 part synthetic oil. This may explain the leaky oil at temperature. I hope the long term damage isnt permanent, any thoughts on this ????

Anyway, have now drained. Tomorrow will change oil filters etc.

UPdate: Just noticed boot on the rear on the rear shift rod is looking pretty knackered. Not sure what problem this might cause?

My geR boot looks like that too! Is it easy to fit a new one?

10w40 semi is perfectly fine to use... The 40 is the hot oil rating, so it's the same viscosity as 15w40 mineral when it's hot...

The leaks are likely to be the push rod tube seals...

Best thing to do is to hit it with a hot jet wash and clean all the muck off it so you can see where it's coming from!! :)

Hi Paul thanks for input.

The problem is the cooler. its either spit or the seals have gone. Either way its emptying the engine of oil pretty quick. How much should I expect to pay to change oil cooler?
